35 Years of Innovation: 2015 ASTech Winners

Growing up in a small town in Alberta, I remember the Radio Shack as a cornerstone of our local mall. It was a go-to destination for anyone curious about the latest in computer technology. However, by 2015, Radio Shack had filed for bankruptcy, signaling a broader shift in retail shopping habits. While this iconic store, which had introduced many to the world of tech, was closing its doors, groundbreaking innovations like Starlink and OpenAI were just beginning to take shape, poised to change the world.

In Alberta, the local tech landscape was also undergoing transformation. According to Startup Alberta, 118 new tech companies were launched that year, many of which are making a significant impact today. Here are a few standouts:

  • Nanoprecise Sci Corp: This company uses AI-powered predictive maintenance to detect even the smallest changes in machine operations, allowing for early intervention before issues impact production or cause downtime.

  • Attabotics: Revolutionizing warehouse fulfillment, Attabotics leverages robotics to reduce the space traditionally required for storage and part retrieval, transforming the logistics and supply chain sector.

  • Pegasus: Focused on autonomous drone technology, Pegasus is developing systems to combat destructive wildfires, unlocking the potential of drones to address critical environmental challenges.

The 2015 ASTech Awards celebrated Alberta's brightest minds and most innovative companies. Here are some of the standout winners:

2015 ASTech Awards Winners

Fedora Pharmaceuticals Inc.: Honored with the Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Technology Award, Fedora developed next-generation beta-lactamase inhibitors to combat drug-resistant bacteria. Led by Christopher Micetich, Fedora’s work in creating life-saving drugs has made a global impact in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Micro Engineering Tech Inc. (METI): Awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Applied Technology and Innovation, METI's Smart Infinity Dimensions (S∞D) IoT platform integrates 3D derivative products from HD maps with real-time sensor data to provide solutions across sectors like oil & gas, construction, and digital infrastructure. Co-founded by Dr. Mohamed Elhabiby, METI is not only a leader in innovation but also a strong supporter of Alberta’s innovation community, including its ongoing involvement with the ASTech Awards.

Kim Sturgess: Recognized with the Outstanding Contribution to Alberta Science and Technology Community Award, Kim Sturgess, CEO of Alberta WaterSMART, has been instrumental in advancing water management strategies across the province. Following the devastating 2013 Alberta floods, Sturgess played a key role in producing a pivotal report that shaped new policies and infrastructure improvements, highlighting the critical importance of informed and collaborative water management.

This post is in partnership with Technology Alberta and the ASTech Awards, celebrating the impact of 35 years of innovation in Alberta, tying our past to our present. Our thanks to Lisa Carter and Horazio Carletti for their research and support.
